Sorry for the short posts this week. As I warned the students, I have after school meetings most nights this week, so they will probably be short! SORRY! I promise we will be back on track by next week.

I will also be away Thursday (afternoon), and Friday this week, so there will be no posts on those days. Students will be doing some fun things with the TOC (teacher on call) however, like the antonym/synonym challenge, so feel free to ask the students what they were up to on those days. I will post more on Monday.

Friday! Friday’s always seem to fly by in 4/5 N, and before you know it the day is over.

We started our Friday by heading off to the computer lab. Today students completed a jigsaw activity on recycling in Alberta. A jigsaw activity is one where each student does a piece of the work/research, and then they come together to put everything together! We had students doing research on one of the following recycling programs: electronics, paint, and tires. More importantly, we learned some of the reasons why these items should not be discarded and placed in a traditional landfill.

We used the following website for our research: http://www.albertarecycling.ca/

Students were also able to share some of the progress they have made this week on their recycling goals! We heard about used shoeboxes being turned into beautiful storage bins, students sharing books and resources, and home composting! Starting next week students will begin a final Waste in Our World project that involves their individual goals, so keep up the good work 4/5 N!

In Art today we have finished our discussion of colour by returning to hot and cold colours. Today students were able to review what they already knew (from our first lesson), but use what we have learned throughout this unit to expand on that knowledge. We discussed the differences between different shades and vibrancies of colours. For example, a dark green vs. lime green, and which colour the students thought was hotter or colder. We also compared hot and cold colours to the concept that we learned last week. Hot colours tend to draw your eye and come forward in a piece, while cool colours can tend to recede. Students used this knowledge to start a hot/cold art piece using oil pastels. Oil pastels allow for students to experience a richer, more vibrant, pure colour than just markers or crayons. We will be continuing this project next week.

Have a great weekend, the weather is supposed to be beautiful!

We will be continuing this project next week.

September 20

We had beautiful weather for our Science Walk today! I think some very tired students went home today as a result! We walked to the Timberlea Recycling Depot so that we could see the recycling bins, and discuss how the community uses this resource center.

We also did a great job at the assembly today. Everyone was very impressed with how organized our class was, and what a great job they did performing. Thanks to the students for the attentive listening that they showed! I was very proud, and Mrs. Swansburg was thrilled!

September 19

It’s hard to believe that tomorrow will be September 20th! This first month of school has just flown by!

Today we got the opportunity to participate in our literacy centers for the first time! We have done many of the centers together as a class over the last two weeks, but today students were able to explore the centers as a group. Some of our centers for this month include: Madlibs, Add-on Stories, Personal Predictions, Cover Art, and Math Equation Match. There are 11 centers all together, and students will be working away at them for the remainder of the month.

Today in Social we had the opportunity to discuss some of the important features of the Grassland Region of Alberta. Students discussed the importance of bodies of water, and the effects that climate has on the region. In order to better understand this topic, we are currently measuring our water usage. Students are tracking approximately how much water they use in a day. This will enable us to discuss water sources in a much clearer fashion. It also has great ties to our current Science unit!

In continuing to develop our writing this month, today we reviewed the parts of a sentence. We have been working towards writing better paragraphs, starting with the topic sentence, and moving on to the body of the paragraph. Students have been doing great things with focusing on a specific topic, but today we broke the sentences up into even smaller pieces. We looked specifically at the nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and verbs of the sentences. Students will continue to work with these grammar concepts throughout the rest of this unit.

Don’t forget that tomorrow is a Science Walk Day! Please make sure that students are dressed appropriately for the lovely fall weather that we are having.

We’ve started reading “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” in Read-Aloud!

September 18

What a crazy day here in 4/5 N!

To start off our day the students had music. They were practicing the cheer that they will be teaching everyone at the Humility Assembly on Thursday. Our students will be performing at 8:30 am for the Grade 6 assembly. They are really looking forward to it!

We also were able to go to the library for the first time today. The students are each allowed to select 2 books per visit, and we recommend that students try a fiction and a non-fiction if they wish to take home 2 books. Students are also allowed to exchanged library books between 12:50-1:20 pm everyday, so if you finish your book early, make sure if you ask me if you can take a trip to the library!

We have been working on problem solving in math, and today we reviewed some of the homework that we have been working on. We also reviewed the problem solving strategies that we have been using throughout this unit. They are: counters, pictures, mental math, inspection, and guess and test. Students can practice these suggested strategies at home or with our problem of the week. Some students have already finished this week’s problem!

Unfortunately the weather was too unpredictable for our walk today, but we will plan on setting out on Thursday as a class. Today we discussed some solutions that we could use to help minimize our ecological footprint. Each student has selected a science goal to work on that they will be journalling on in class throughout this unit. Students also played the role of a resesarch and development team today. They were all employees at Miss B’s candy factory, and they were needed to help design our new, wastefree boxes. Students had a lot of great ideas, from using recycled materials to reducing paper usage, that I’m sure our factories will be implementing soon.

I forgot to announce yesterday that we have made our final selection for NASA’s Name the Asteroid contest. We have decided on… Lollipop! Sapphire was a close second. Don’t forget that if you would like to submit your own entry, you can visit NASA’s site here: http://www.nasa.gov/topics/solarsystem/features/name-asteroid.html.

September 17

Happy Monday!

Today sure felt like a Monday here in 4/5 N. We were VERY busy. We started out our day by comparing some of the packaging examples that students brought from home. Specifically we were looking for things that were necessary vs. things that were wasteful. We also considered whether or not our packaging was natural, recyclable, or non-recyclable. In order to better communicate some of our ideas, we did a quick think, pair, share on the packaging items. Students thought (quietly, to themselves) about the item they brought in. Then students pair with another student to share their thoughts. Finally we come back together as a whole class, and students are welcome to share some of their conclusions with the class.

We also completed a brand new “Making Words” activity today. Our spelling words selected from the activity will be: advertisement, driven, drive, meaner, mean, neatest, meanest, neat, misread, and mistreat. We also examined words that end in -est today. As a class we came up with these rules for adding -est:

  • Usually, the first word does not change (eg. neatest, meanest)
  • You cannot have a word end in -yest, change it to -iest (eg. meatiest)
  • When you have word that ends in a vowel + consonant pair (eg. ig), you need to double the consonant (eg. biggest vs. bigest)

We also discussed how -est changes the word, and decided that -est “makes the first word mean more”. Eg. neatest – more neat than neat.

We also had another classroom meeting today. During our meeting we discussed the tribes agreement of “Right to Pass”. We discussed the difference between participation and choosing to pass, and what passing might look like in our classroom. We decided that if you have a reason to pass (eg. don’t know, not comfortable) you can just say “pass”. However, we all should be doing or best to participate whenever possible. We also decided to make Monday from 2:20-2:40 pm, “Catch-up Monday”. Students will be allowed to work on unfinished work, art, organizing their desks, and their homework during this time. The initial suggestion was for a “Catch-up Friday”, but unfortunately our Friday was too busy to add to. As a class we decided to try “Catch-up Monday” for the next 3 Mondays, and then to review it as a class at another classroom meeting.

Happy Friday Everyone!

What a great day here in 4/5 N.

We started off the day by going to the computer lab. Students explored the Royal Tyrrell Museum website (www.tyrrellmuseum.com) in order to gain a better understanding of how the museum contributes to our knowledge of Alberta’s past and our identity. It also required us to practice some of our internet researching skills.

Today in Music, our class performed so well, that Mrs. Swansburg has asked the students to perform a special Timberlea cheer at our upcoming Humility assembly. The assembly will be at 8:30 am, September 20. Way to go 4/5 N!

Today in Art we continued our exploration of colour by using complementary colours to create optical illusions. Check out some of our work!

Oooooh, crazy!
