Good evening,
Today students continued to explore our new Social Studies region, the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Region. When we were studying the Appalachian Region, we spent some time discussing climate and how the climate of the region impacts how people within the region live. We also discussed severe forms of weather that impact the Appalachians, such as hurricanes. Specifically, we discussed Hurricane Juan. In our new region, we have also begun discussing climate. We are currently looking at the 1998 ice storms that badly impacted this region. Students were asked to use their books as well as IPads to help them to compare these two events. Using a Venn Diagram, students compared the differences and similarities between these to different events.
In Book Buddies today, we were able to help our buddies to make a Christmas Craft. Using recycled cards, ribbons, and some tape, students made little stockings for their buddies to take home with a treat inside. Thank you so much Grade 5’s for being such good helpers today. Your buddies all really appreciated your effort. Special thanks to some of our parent volunteers who prepared this craft for us! Your hard work was greatly appreciated and the craft turned out wonderfully.
In Art today, students continued to work on our door. We have been using a recycling theme to decorate the door this year. Besides the background paper used, every item has been made using recycled materials. Even the paper used to wrap/decorate houses was taken from the scrap paper bin in our classroom. It looks great! On Monday, we are adding snow and something extra special!
Next week we will be having a Spirit Week. The information can be found below:
This Spirit Week is in support of our Breakfast Program. Each morning when students come in, they have the option of selecting items off of our Breakfast Carts. The carts are stocked with an item from different sections of Canada’s food guide such as cheese for dairy, fruit for fruits and vegetables, and cereals for grains. Many students who have missed breakfast or who are even just wanting a little extra snack in the morning, use these carts. This is a great program that we love having at Timberlea School, and all our volunteers work very hard to keep it up and running. Monday will be holiday hat day (eg. santa, elf, etc.) and students are asked to donate nugrigrain bars. Anything that is donated would be greatly appreciated in order to continue this great school initiative.

Did You Know…? The word zetetic means asking, questioning, investigating or proceeding by inquiry.
Good evening,
Today students continued to practice their comparing reading strategy. Students listened to two tumblebooks, “The Bears We Know” by Brenda Silsbe and “Cinnamon and the April Shower” by Amy Crane Johnson. Students worked to summarize both stories. They were asked to think about what happened first, second, third, and finally. We organized our findings in a circle chart that you can see below:
Having the two books summarized on the same page makes it easier for us to recall what happened in both books when we are working on our comparisons.
In Math today we finished Lesson #1 in Multiplication and Division. Students reviewed the following vocabulary terms: product, factor, quotient, divisor, and related facts. Then we discussed multiplying and dividing by 0. Students were able to quickly note what happens when you multiply a number by 0. Because we know that multiplication is creating groups, you can think about it like this:
3 x 5 = 15
3 groups of 5 is equal to 15
11111 11111 11111
0 x 5 = __
0 groups of 5… wait! If I have 0 groups the answer must be 0!
5 groups of 0 is equal to 0
0 0 0 0 0
No matter how you express it, the answer has to be 0
0 x any number = 0
We also spent some time discussing dividing using 0. For this, students were asked to consider the related multiplication facts. For example:
If 0 x 5 = 0
Then 0 ÷ 5 = 0
0 divided into 5 groups is equal to 0
0 0 0 0 0
What about 5 ÷ 0 ?
This is not possible
5 is already a group (1 group of 5)…
so it is impossible to say that 5 can be split into 0 groups
In Science today, students were asked to finish their research on rain, snow, sleet, freezing rain, and hail. Students SHOULD have brought home Science duotangs tonight to prepare for tomorrow’s quiz. If students forgot their duotangs, please use the notes from class that have been posted on this blog. Below are our precipitation notes. Cloud notes can be located on November 27th. There are also links to the websites used by students in class to help with research. All links can be located on the right hand side under the December/November links.
