Friday! Friday’s always seem to fly by in 4/5 N, and before you know it the day is over.

We started our Friday by heading off to the computer lab. Today students completed a jigsaw activity on recycling in Alberta. A jigsaw activity is one where each student does a piece of the work/research, and then they come together to put everything together! We had students doing research on one of the following recycling programs: electronics, paint, and tires. More importantly, we learned some of the reasons why these items should not be discarded and placed in a traditional landfill.

We used the following website for our research: http://www.albertarecycling.ca/

Students were also able to share some of the progress they have made this week on their recycling goals! We heard about used shoeboxes being turned into beautiful storage bins, students sharing books and resources, and home composting! Starting next week students will begin a final Waste in Our World project that involves their individual goals, so keep up the good work 4/5 N!

In Art today we have finished our discussion of colour by returning to hot and cold colours. Today students were able to review what they already knew (from our first lesson), but use what we have learned throughout this unit to expand on that knowledge. We discussed the differences between different shades and vibrancies of colours. For example, a dark green vs. lime green, and which colour the students thought was hotter or colder. We also compared hot and cold colours to the concept that we learned last week. Hot colours tend to draw your eye and come forward in a piece, while cool colours can tend to recede. Students used this knowledge to start a hot/cold art piece using oil pastels. Oil pastels allow for students to experience a richer, more vibrant, pure colour than just markers or crayons. We will be continuing this project next week.
