Global Read Aloud starts on Monday! We were so excited that we just couldn’t wait to start talking about Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. Today we made a cross-curricular connection to our Grade 4 Science unit, “Waste in Our World,” by using some leftover construction paper from previous years and using some old magazines to make these cute fish collages.
Then we started to think about the book a little bit. Our reading strategy for the month of September has been predicting. So, we tried to make some predictions about the book today. Students were asked to think about the following quote:
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” ~Albert Einstein

“I think the meaning behind the quote is if you look at somebody and think they are boring or dumb then you walk up to them and tell them they are not special and that they are dumb when they are actually the most fun person ever, they are going to live the rest of their life thinking they are stupid. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.” – Amira“I think it is about Ally that is not great at reading but not bad. But she is maybe good at Math, Social, or even Language Arts and she is way to nervous t ask for help, also, I bet she is a pretty good reader and writer.” – Mohamed“I think he meant don’t judge a book by it’s cover because if you do it won’t try what it wants to do. It’s like when a person says you can’t read you won’t try again. So you should not judge people and you should always follow your dreams.” – Matthew“He meant you shouldn’t judge a person by what they are like. Everyone’s unique and special. Everyone has a talent to show they are good at something. Some comments have a big effect on people. If you say they are stupid they will live their life thinking they are stupid. It means she is intelligent in her own way. Others may think different than she does. But she may be more intelligent. Everyone is intelligent in their own way.” – Kaleb
As you can see, we had some wonderful predictions made today. We can’t wait to start reading on Monday to see if any of them are true!
