Hi everyone!

Today we were glad for the change in the weather! It was a little cool out, but at least there was no more rain! Thanks to the sunshine our class got the opportunity to help with “Community Clean-up” today. We went outside and cleaned up the outdoor hockey rink and surrounding areas. Students got gloves, garbage bags, and a little bit of fresh air. This also led us to discuss landfill usage in Science today. We looked at the construction of a landfill and talked about it’s usage over time.

We also worked at writing paragraphs today. We have been practicing writing topic sentences, but today we moved on to the supporting details of a paragraph. As a class we decided that the must-haves are:

  • an indent
  • a good topic sentence
  • have at least 3 supporting details
  • a conclusion
  • capital letters and correct punctuation
  • spelling correctly

Students will continue to practice adding appropriate and logical supporting details that match a topic sentence in Language Arts this month.

Don’t forget about the family BBQ tomorrow night! If you are stopping by, feel free to come over and introduce yourself. I look forward to meeting some of you.

Ahoy Mateys!

Today we had an awesome day here in Grade 4/5 N. We started off by beginning a classroom dictionary. The students made pages for each of our words of the week (tuner, tune, enter, tender, nature, venture, dearest, nearest, dentures, adventures) that included a definition, a sentence utilizing the word, and an explanatory picture. We are keeping the pages in a pink binder in our classroom library and will be adding to it throughout the year.

We also had a treasure hunt today. Students donned our homemade pirate hats and costume pieces from home (everyone looked spectacular!), and we had a race to see who could map out their Social Studies textbook the fastest. Students searched for glossary words, Alberta place names, and explored the index. And nobody was forced to walk the plank.

Aarrgh!

Happy Monday!

We had a great day today, and as it was our first Monday of the school year we had lots of new Monday activities and routines!

Starting this week, the students will be keeping a Reading Journal. They are expected to read for 20 minutes each night, and to track their own reading. This journal must be signed by the parents/guardians, to ensure that students are indeed reading on a daily basis. The students will also be expected to submit a weekly response to their reading on the same sheet. Please take a look at your child’s response and leave them an encouraging comment on the bottom of the page. We are working towards becoming strong readers, and your help with this assignment would be greatly appreciated by both myself and the students.

Also new this week is our “MYSTERY WORD CHALLENGE”. Each Monday, the students are given a set of letters that they attempt to build words from. Each week 10 of these words will be selected, and on Friday there will be a short spelling test. This week our words are: tuner, tune, enter, tender, nature, venture, dearest, nearest, dentures, adventures.

We have also started a Problem of the Week (or POW) that students are challenged to complete by the end of the week. Our problem this week is: Using digits 1 to 9, arrange the numbers in 3 groups so that the sum is the same in each group.

Today we also had our very first classroom meeting. Classroom meetings are a time for our class to come together and to work through some of the  TRIBES agreements and concepts, and to discuss important class issues. Today we played “Clap Together” and discussed the importance of “Attentive Listening”. Students had to guide me to be a better listener, and thus a better leader for this activity. “Attentive Listening” is a TRIBES agreement that we will continue to practice throughout the year, and we encourage students to practice these virtues and traits both within and away from school.

See you tomorrow everyone!

Hello everyone!

Sorry about yesterday’s short post, and though I wish I could say that it will never happen again, it probably will throughout the year!

Our class will be entering NASA’s “Name that Asteroid” competition. NASA has asked students from around the world to submit an entry to name asteroid 1999 RQ36 by December, 2012. NASA has two upcoming missions planned surrounding this asteroid: one in 2016 and a crewed mission in 2025. Our class worked in the computer lab today, exploring www.babynames.com and coming up with some suggestions for the Asteroid’s name. I will be compiling a list of suggestions over the weekend, and our class will select the winner early next week. Many of the students have expressed an interest in this contest, so feel free to take a look and maybe submit an entry of your own!

In Art today we continued our exploration of colour. The students reviewed the primary and secondary colours, and then we worked with paint in order to explore mixing colours. In order to do this I had students paint an ocean scene. They had to paint one fish for each of the primary colours, two for the secondary colours, and then mix their own colour! Check out some of our creations:

Hello everyone!

Today we had a very busy day in Grade 4/5 N.

We started off our day by completing the class biographies that we began yesterday. Students spent time developing the answers from their interviews into a biography on their classmate. These biographies gave us the opportunity to discuss topic sentences. Now we are all confident starting our paragraphs in an interesting/important way!

Today we also defined the following words: producer, consumer, decomposer. Students examined where these words fit into the food chains we created yesterday, and pretty soon we were all sharing ideas on how to connect the producers to the consumers.

The students also had French for the very first time today. The Grade 4s have French in the morning, and the Grade 5s have French in the afternoon. So far this has been great for our classroom. During this time the opposite grade works on a Math lesson together. This gives us the opportunity to focus entirely on the Grade 4 curriculum or to focus on the Grade 5 curriculum. The students also get a lot more one-on-one time during this block.

Welcome back!

I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing long weekend in spite of the weather.

Today we began a Language Arts assignment in which students took turns interviewing each other. The students worked in groups to develop 6 interesting/important questions that they might ask in an interview, and we got a lot of great results! Students wanted to know:

What do you want to be when you grow up?

What is your favorite subject?

What is your favorite food?

What is your favorite sport?

What types of family trips have you taken?

Have you had any difficulties in your life?

Next students partnered up and answered these questions for their curious classmate. Tomorrow we will be turning these interviews into exciting biographies that the students will be able to share with one another.

We also began our “Waste in Our World” Unit in Science, and learned all about how waste can be recycled and reused today. The students watched 2 short videos on plant decomposition and the American burying beetle, and we discussed the importance of decomposers to ourselves and the environment.

In Social, students were asked to share what they know about Alberta by telling me about Alberta’s people, places, past and future. The students knew a lot! They told me about their families, celebrities, native populations, Fort McMurray, Jasper, Calgary, Edmonton, and speculated on what the Alberta of tomorrow will look like. We’ve added this information to our Social Studies board, and will be returning to it later in the unit.

A special reminder as we get the year underway that Timberlea IS a PEANUT-FREE school. It is extremely important that any food or food product that comes into the school and our classroom be peanut free. Please check ingredient lists carefully, and consider this important rule if you plan on bringing food products into the classroom. This rule not only applies to the day-to-day in our classroom, but for special events as well. Thank you for your understanding.
