Did You Know…? The word zetetic means asking, questioning, investigating or proceeding by inquiry.

Good evening,

Today students continued to practice their comparing reading strategy. Students listened to two tumblebooks, “The Bears We Know” by Brenda Silsbe and “Cinnamon and the April Shower” by Amy Crane Johnson. Students worked to summarize both stories. They were asked to think about what happened first, second, third, and finally. We organized our findings in a circle chart that you can see below:

December4

Having the two books summarized on the same page makes it easier for us to recall what happened in both books when we are working on our comparisons.

In Math today we finished Lesson #1 in Multiplication and Division. Students reviewed the following vocabulary terms: product, factor, quotient, divisor, and related facts. Then we discussed multiplying and dividing by 0. Students were able to quickly note what happens when you multiply a number by 0. Because we know that multiplication is creating groups, you can think about it like this:

3 x 5 = 15

3 groups of 5 is equal to 15

11111     11111     11111

0 x 5 = __

0 groups of 5… wait! If I have 0 groups the answer must be 0!

5 groups of 0 is equal to 0

0     0     0     0     0

No matter how you express it, the answer has to be 0

0 x any number = 0

We also spent some time discussing dividing using 0. For this, students were asked to consider the related multiplication facts. For example:

If 0 x 5 = 0

Then 0 ÷ 5 = 0

0 divided into 5 groups is equal to 0

0     0     0     0     0

What about 5 ÷ 0 ?

This is not possible

5 is already a group (1 group of 5)…

so it is impossible to say that 5 can be split into 0 groups

In Science today, students were asked to finish their research on rain, snow, sleet, freezing rain, and hail. Students SHOULD have brought home Science duotangs tonight to prepare for tomorrow’s quiz. If students forgot their duotangs, please use the notes from class that have been posted on this blog. Below are our precipitation notes. Cloud notes can be located on November 27th. There are also links to the websites used by students in class to help with research. All links can be located on the right hand side under the December/November links.
