Did You Know…? Play Doh was originally marketed as a wallpaper cleaner.

Good evening,

Thank you everyone for your patience and understanding while I was away last week. The TOC left me extremely positive notes about the class and their behaviour. I was very proud to come back to see how hard everyone worked while I was away. I asked the students today to be a little patient with me this week as we get caught up, but we’ll be back on track in no time with this group of awesome students!

In Math today, the Grade 4 students and I reviewed their previous lesson. So far in their new unit, students have been working at being able to identify and describe patterns using pattern rules. Now students are transitioning into being able to recognize and describe patterns in tables and charts, as well as being able to organize pattern information into tables and charts. Take today’s example:

Math1

First we looked at the triangular figures seen above. As we looked at the number of dots in the perimeter of each triangle, we observed that the number of dots in the triangles were: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15. Right away we realized that this was a pattern! We described it as: start at 3 and count up by 3 each time. Next, we organized this information into a table:

Math2

Using the pattern rule to extend the table, we could answer further questions about the triangles such as:

  • How many dots will be in the perimeter of the 12th triangle? (36 dots)
  • Will any of the triangles have a 22 dot perimeter? (No, that is impossible)

We will continue to use tables in our work throughout this unit.

In Language Arts today, students received their new spelling words:

  1. airplanes
  2. praise
  3. alien
  4. learn
  5. plane
  6. plain
  7. pain
  8. pane
  9. sail
  10. sale

This week we are looking at homophones, specifically homophones that end in -ail/-ale, or -ane/-ain. A homophone is a word that sounds the same, but has a different meaning. They can be spelt the same (like watch and watch), or they can be spelt differently (like plane and plain). Our new words have been added to Spelling City for those interested in practicing at home. We also used a new Spelling Menu today that students will be using throughout the week to practice their spelling:

Word Work Practice

Students will be practicing their spelling when they finish their work throughout the day. These strategies can also be used at home to help students to review. Today we used paper copies, but everyone will be getting a laminated copy tomorrow that will last longer throughout the year.

In Language Arts today we also did a review activity on prefixes. Our spelling words last week focused on the prefixes: mis-, in-, and ad-. Today students completed a CAFE using the following prefixes: over-, under-, de-, non-. Students have done a CAFE before; using proper nouns. Each group is a colour (eg. blue). Each group gets two minutes to brainstorm as many words that fit into their category (eg. -non) as possible. Then groups move on to the next topic. Once we finished today, we reviewed some of our findings as well as some examples from the dictionary, and discussed what we thought the meaning of each prefix was:

LA1 LA2 LA3 LA4

We found that de- was the most difficult because we could think of many words that started with the “de” word chunk, but the meaning of the prefix “de-” didn’t also match those words. It had the most rule breakers.

In Social Studies today, we reviewed our provinces, territories, and capital cities for the final time. Students will have their third and final quiz on Thursday, before we all begin a geography project next week. The Grade 4 students will be focusing on the geography and regions of Alberta and the Grade 5 students will be focusing on the geography and regions of Canada. Please help your student to review their provinces, territories, and capitals at home over the next two evenings. This is part of a required outcome for both our Grade 4 students and our Grade 5 students:

  • 4.1.2.1 – Where is Alberta located in relation to the other provinces and territories of Canada?
  • 5.1.1.7 – Appreciate the geographic vastness of Canada.

Students have a labelled map of Canada in their Agendas. They can also use the Sheppard Software link (see side links) in order to review at home.
