Did You Know…? Chickens are able to remember and recognize over 100 individuals; they can also recognize humans.

Good afternoon,

Today we practiced adding and subtracting decimals in Math. We are using two strategies to help us add and subtract decimals. The first is a traditional addition method, similar to what we used earlier in the year during our whole number unit. For example:

3  .  1  9

+ 2  .  2  8

5  .  4  7

With this strategy, it is very important that students carefully line up their place-value numbers (eg. ones with ones, tenths with tenths, etc.). This will also make it more clear as to where to place the final decimal; just follow it to the bottom! The other strategy we used was an expanded number strategy. For example:

3.19 = 3 + 0.1 + 0.09 and 2.28 = 2 + 0.2 + 0.08, so…

3  .  0  0

0  .  1  0

0  .  0  9

2  .  0  0

0  .  2  0

+ 0  .  0  8

5  .  4  7

For some students this strategy makes it easier to keep the place-value clear and uncluttered. Again, it is important to have neat work and to line up your columns neatly. This will make it easier to put in your final decimal at the end. Don’t forget, equivalent decimals should be used as place-value holders (eg. changing 3 to 3.00 when adding with numbers to the hundredths place, see above).

We also started our CAT-4 examinations today. This is mandated by the district and all students must complete the exam. There are 6 sections, from the following areas: Computation and Estimation, Reading Analysis, Vocabulary, Writing Conventions, and Spelling. Today we completed the Vocabulary section. Please try and make sure students are present this week, as they will have to make up tests missed and all exams need to be completed no later than May 22nd. For more information visit (http://www.canadiantestcentre.com/CAT4/CAT4-Home.php).

We also had some fun watching the Egg Break 2015 live feed from Thickwood Heights School. Our patience paid off; one of the eggs hatched just before we went home at the end of the day. To keep track of the last two eggs at home tonight, check out the live feed link below.

Did You Know…? Horses can lock their knee and elbow joints to enable them to stand (and sleep) without using their muscles.

Good evening,

Today students continued to examine decimal numbers. Students are now working on comparing and order decimals to the thousandths place. To get started today we watched the following Math 5 Live episode:

http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/me5l/html/math5.html?goLesson=6

Don’t forget that these lessons can and should be reviewed at home for extra practice. You can even click on some of the contained links to access extra practice pages or parent’s and teacher’s guides to help guide your student through the suggested strategies. As our Fractions and Decimals test will be next week (May 20th), it is strongly recommended that students begin reviewing this unit at home this week. They should be doing extra practice questions from their textbook, reviewing Math 5 Live episodes, or using their Mathletics accounts. A study guide will go home later this week.

In French today, students began to explore school subjects. We watched this funny video to get us started:

We discussed some of the differences in the subjects (eg. no Social Studies, broken into Geography and History) and why students in France might have so many language classes available to them and why it would be a good idea for European students to have an understanding of a variety of European languages. Students then thought about their own preferences. They were asked to decided on a subject they liked, loved, preferred, did not like, or detested. They had to finish the sentences in French of course (eg. J’aime le Français).

Did You Know…? Handschuhschneeballwe-rfer is a German slang for ‘coward’. It means someone who wears gloves to throw snowballs

Good afternoon,

Today students continued to explore mixtures in Science. While we have already created solid and liquid solutions (eg. Epsom salts and water) we have yet to really focus on dissolving. Dissolving is when the particles of one substance becomes completely intermingled with the particles of another substance. When a solution is formed, the particles are so intermingled that you can no longer tell each substance apart. Instead, it will appear to be a single substance. Today students conducted an experiment on the rate at which a sweet-tart dissolves. Students attempted to dissolve a single candy in approximately 300 mL of water while slowly stirring the water. After 10 minutes, it appeared that while the candies has begun dissolving, it was a very slow process. Students then were asked to add some energy to the solvent (water) by rapidly stirring or even shaking their container. The result was that they remainder of the candies had dissolved in 2 minutes. We then conducted the same experiment again, this time we focused on either manipulating the size of the solute or the temperature of the solvent. Students crushed the candy into a powder or used hot water instead of room temperature. The results were again significantly quicker than our very first trial. The powder groups were able to dissolve their solute in no more than 30 seconds. The groups that used hot water were able to dissolve the candy in 1-2 minutes. From this experiment we have inferred that the more energy the particles of the solvent have, the faster the solute dissolves.

Don’t forget about our Science quiz tomorrow on Mixtures. Students each brought home a study guide yesterday. Today we completed the answers to the remaining questions on the board. A copy of the Study Guide can be found below.

Did You Know…? There are about 50 species of lobster, including the hunchback locust, the velvet fan and the musical furry.

Good evening,

Students have been working on comparing fractions to decimals as well as comparing and ordering both fractions and decimals. Today we added ANOTHER place value place to what we already have been studying – thousandths! That means that students should now be able to change a fraction with a denominator of 1000 into a decimal.

Eg. 4/1000 = 0.004

Don’t forget that we DON’T go past the thousandths place, so don’t let the example below trick you:

Eg. 63/1000 = 0.063

Students were also reminded about equivalent fractions and decimals today. It is important for students to be able to see and understand the relationship between these place value places, and have an understanding of the value of the numbers. We created a reference sheet for our Math duotang to help with this. On it we modeled (using a thousandths grid) and recorded some equivalent fractions and decimals. We learned that:

  • 700/1000 = 70/100 = 7/10
  • 0.700 = 0.70 = 0.7

Students don’t have homework this evening, as today was Day 1 of this lesson, however, students are strongly encouraged to use their Mathletics for nightly review. Students should be using Mathletics at least 2-3 times per week to be getting extra practice and support. And don’t forget, Math Help still every Wednesday from 3:00-4:00 pm.

In Language Arts today we began researching our research papers. Groups were each assigned a Wetlands animal that they need to research and write a report on. We will be having specific lessons on report writing next week, but today students were using their skimming, scanning, and determining importance reading strategies to complete the following graphic organizer on their animal.

Wetlands Reports – Research Paper

Students are researching one of the following: beaver, mallard duck, northern shoveller, boreal chorus frog, or a northern leopard frog.

In Science, we have begun reviewing mixtures and the techniques that we have been using to separate them. Students will have a quiz on the mixtures on Friday. Tonight, students were asked to take home a section of their study guide to review. This section has a lot of the vocabulary from the unit, and students should not only read over their notes but practice being quizzed or tested on their use of the vocabulary. Talk it out! Tomorrow we will review separation techniques as a class, completing the study guide.

Did You Know…? The first place to allow women to vote was the State of Wyoming in 1869.

Good afternoon,

Today we were celebrating Revenge of the 5th in our class. We started out by coming up with our Star Wars names to use for the day. Want to come up with your own name at home? Here is how we did it:

  1. Take the first 3 letters of your first name.
  2. Add the last 2 letters of your last name. This is your Star Wars first name.
  3. Take the first 2 letters of your mother’s maiden name.
  4. Add the first 3 letters of your hometown. This is your Star Wars last name.

For example:

  1. ASHley
  2. BarringtON (First name: Ashon)
  3. MAcInnes
  4. FORt McMurray (Last name: Mafor)

Students had fun practicing their names and making their name tags. After recess, we watched a short video summary of the rise of Senator Palpatine and the Galactic Empire:

This led to a discussion on the different types of governments there are in the world such as dictatorships, tyrannies, etc. We decided that today we would be part of a dictatorship. We pulled a name out of a bucket and that student became the head of the Galactic Empire for the morning – Lord Josan Yerig. At first things under Lord Yerig’s rule were okay. We had to ask his permission before doing a lot of things, but most of our Math class started out similarly to many of our other classes. However, as time went on, Lord Yerig became more and more demanding. When some of the students argued or disagreed, they were often severely punished (eg. we had quite a few students hopping around on one leg, or holding their hands behind their backs). We even had to put down a rebel uprising among the other members of the class. While we all laughed and had fun, afterwards we discussed some of the positives and negatives we observed during the morning. We agreed that while Lord Yerig’s rule was well ordered and we were able to get things done quickly under his guidance, students didn’t feel safe, secure, and they didn’t have any rights and freedoms of their own.

Well… today in Social Studies, we used this opportunity to explore the Canadian Charter of Rights. The link to the overview we used is included below. After discussing some of the fundamental freedoms that Canadians have (Eg. Freedom of conscience and religion, freedom of thought, belief, and expression, freedom of association, and the freedom of peaceful assembly), we compared them to our classroom experiences from this morning. This morning students were not allowed the freedom of association or peaceful assembly. Meetings between students were quickly put down for fear of a rebel uprising. Students did not have freedom of thought, belief, and expression. They had to agree with Lord Yerig, or fear punishment. We spent our afternoon discussing some of the rights that we have in our classroom/school (Eg. going to the bathroom, to practice and share our religion and culture with other students, to ask questions, etc.) we thought about why the Charter of Rights and Freedoms is so important for Canadians. We also had to think about some of the responsibilities Canadians have in order to maintain their rights. A major responsibility was of course being modeled for students in the gym today – voting!

Did You Know…? Squirrels can remember the hiding places of up to 10,000 nuts.

Good evening,

Today students continued to examine mixtures in Science class. Today we worked on mixtures involving liquids and solids. There are three methods we are going to be studying to separate these mixtures: decanting, filtering, and evaporation. Today we practiced all three. Students practiced decanting with a mixture of ones cubes and water. Since the ones cubes don’t mix into the water and it remains a mechanical mixture, it is easy to decant them. All students had to do was pour off the water. We used a mixture of baby powder and water to practice filtering. Baby powder does not dissolve in water, so it doesn’t form a solution. It forms a suspension at first, but eventually the heavier baby powder and water will separate on their own, with the powder settling on the bottom. We could decant it once this has occurred. However, while the baby powder was suspended in the water, we could use filtering. Using a coffee filter today, students were able to carefully remove some of the baby powder from the mixture. Finally, we set up our evaporation experiment. Students were using a mixture of Epsom salts and water. The salts do dissolve in the water and you can no longer see any salt particles. This is a solution. One way to separate a solution is to allow the water time to evaporate. The salt crystals will remain. We dissolved our salts in hot water today to speed up the process. Tomorrow we will learn other ways to increase the speed of dissolution.

In French today, students began examining different phrases that we can use to communicate in our classroom. The slides we covered are included below:

Classroom Phrases Powerpoint

Now, as a classroom challenge, students need to ask for certain things in French only. Need to go to the washroom? Well… students need to say, “Est-ce que je peux aller aux toilettes?” Want a pencil? Well… “J’ai besoin d’un crayon.” What if students don’t understand what is being asked of them? Well… “Je ne comprends pas!” Students will continue to be practicing these expressions in the upcoming weeks.

We are still waiting on a few Google Classroom forms from some students. If you have not already done so, please see that these forms are signed and returned to school as quickly as possible. Want to know some of the things that we will be using Google for? Check out these great videos below:
