Did You Know…? Newborn killer whales don’t sleep for a month after birth.
Good evening,
We have had an incredible week. A busy week, but incredible! Our students have worked extremely hard on their Canstruction fundraising this week. Planning and running those games for the other classes, especially on a windy day like today, was hard work. I saw so much teamwork and leadership from our students. It was amazing to see something that we talked about become a reality. So, if your feet are tired from all that standing, make sure you take a nice long break this weekend, you earned it.
Oh, and just in case you were wondering how much money you raised… well… over $500!!! Think of all the cans we are going to be able to buy! Think of how much bigger we are going to be able to make our structure. It is beginning to sound like next week is going to be busy, busy, busy as well. I’m already excited!

A quick post for tonight… don’t forget we have a Math test tomorrow! Students brought home a study workbook on Monday, and today they also brought home their problem of the day workbooks. These books contain the solutions to their study workbook and should help them to check over their work tonight. Students also should be finishing and reviewing the “Show What You Know” questions at the end of the chapter. Need another study workbook? Click the link on the right until Mar-Apr Links.

Good evening,
Today we had a VERY busy day. This morning we had a guest speak from Jr. Achievement join our class. The speaker was there to discuss some of the basics of starting a running a business with us. We looked into the costs (rent, employees’ wages, equipment) and some of the benefits (money, enjoyment, etc.) that can come from starting your own business. We also discussed some of the difficulties (eg. loans, etc.) and strategies that people may use in order to be successful (eg. marketing). Students planned a small business as a group, from Dog-Washing to Hot Dog Selling, and even looked over applicants resumes to come and work for them. I was very impressed with everyone’s respectful listening, especially through the second half of the presentation. Well done everyone!
This afternoon we had our first Canstruction Carnival! Students ran stations such as Shoe Kick, Bowling, Target Practice, and Pick a Cup. We also had our Can-Monster out on display. We fundraised about 10 cans and $41 just today. We will have our Carnival open tomorrow and Thursday as well. Thanks for all your hard work students. The students organized, planned, and prepared all the stations on their own, and the Grade 3 class who came today had a great time.

Did You Know…? The French fashion for men wearing wigs began with Louis XIII (who went prematurely bald) and ended with the Revolution.
Good evening,
Today we finished our unit on Measurement by looking at displacement. Students learned that 1 mL = 1 cm³. That means that we can use capacity to help us to measure the volume of objects. Take a toy car for example. If we fill a graduated cylinder with 200 mL of water and we add the toy car, the water will be displaced. The graduated cylinder now reads 215 mL. That means that 15 mL of water was displaced. Since 1 mL = 1 cm³, the volume of the toy car must be 15 cm³. Remember to use square units to measure volume and mL and L for capacity! We have our unit test on Thursday. Students took home a copy of the following study guide to help them to prepare. Review it at home, and don’t forget to come to Math help if needed this week!
In French today, we reviewed the names of animals that we have learned throughout this unit, and also practiced some colour vocabulary. How? We read “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See?” or “Ours Brun, Dis-Moi…” Why not read the story to your parents or to a younger brother or sister tonight?
We also learned about some different animal habitats. We discussed how fish often live in bowls (un bol), sheep live on farms (une ferme), and crocodiles live in rivers (la rivière), as well as others. If you didn’t finish illustrating your habitats in class today, it is for homework. Bring it to class next Monday!
In Health today we reviewed the concept of the coping step plan. This is something that we discussed before the break. It can make a challenging task easier if we break it into smaller, more manageable steps. We completed an example (eg. speaking in front of the class) together today. Students will be working this week on creating their own coping step plans. I’ve asked them to think about something that they would like to do (a goal) or something that is worrying them or bothering them (eg. the math test). They need to come up with small manageable steps that will help them to prepare to meet their goal. Don’t forget to think green, helpful thoughts along the way!

Did You Know…? The sabre-tooth squirrel featured in the 2002 film Ice Age was fictional – until a real one was discovered in 2011.
Good evening,
Today students worked on one of the final Measurement Problem of the Day questions. We complete a Problem of the Day every day of the week. Students are asked to copy down the important information, solve (showing their work), then together we solve the problem and students write a small journal entry on whether their solution was correct/incorrect and why. It is a great way to review recently completed lessons and for students to get practice communicating their understanding. As we have a test when we return from Spring Break, I wanted to post the previous Measurement Problem of the Day questions. Students who are going to begin studying over the break may find these questions a good place to start. They are a good review of the types of questions studied in our unit.
Today we also worked on our Canstruction project. Students finished planning the stations for the Canstruction Carnival we are holding on April 14th-16th. Then, they worked together to finalize their design. We were then able to use the cans that we have already raised to get a more accurate estimate of what we need. The students calculated today that if they get enough cans to do the outline of their design, they will need about 600 cans. We already have 100! If we are able to raise more cans, then we will add back in some of the details from our initial design like coloured layers in the middle and the border. Even though we have simplified the design, I don’t think any of us were disappointed with the result. It was so exciting to see it starting to take shape today. Check out the pictures below.
Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Talent Show today! You did a wonderful job and it was so exciting seeing all of you up there!

Did You Know…? In 2007, new measurements showed the Amazon had overtaken the Nile as the world’s longest river.
Good evening,
We started off our day to day with our Jump Rope for Heart Assembly. Students will have brought home their fundraising information today. The assembly was meant to get students excited and inspired for the project. It featured a quick DPA quiz on heart health, some student and teacher jump rope tricks and contests, and some information from the Heart and Stroke Foundation about why Jump Rope for Heart is so important. Click on the video below for an example.
The rest of our morning was spent largely working on a secret project, which is soooooo secret that we can’t talk about it right now. We will be sharing some pictures of it on April 13th though.
This afternoon students were able to publish some work from their paragraph books. That means some new work on our Writing Board, and some new work for our Writing Portfolios. Students have come a long way since we first started our paragraph focus, and the final, published drafts are looking wonderful. Can’t wait for our next writing focus in April!
Classroom 5K is busy planning a Canstruction project for the Wood Buffalo Food Bank! Students will be building a structure made entirely of food cans at Walter and Gladys Hill on April 25th. The contest theme is the Western Canada Summer Games, and students have chosen to construct a cycler. All the cans will be donated to the Food Bank after the sculptures have been judged. They are currently seeking monetary and can donations to support this project. They are collecting a variety of cans in different shapes and sizes, but primarily need 398 mL cans. The monetary donations will be used to purchase cans of a specific brand/colour that matches the students’ design. In order to create the sculpture, they need as many cans as possible! Students will be collecting donated cans throughout the remainder of this week and after the break, but the sooner the better for the Canstruction Team. They are eager to get their building underway!
If you are able to donate, donations can be brought to Ms. Barrington’s classroom until April 20th.
