Did You Know…? The word ‘forfrorn’ means ‘to be stuck fast in ice’.

Good evening,

In Phys. Ed. today, students started to learn how to curl! Check out the amazing indoor curling equipment bought by our student council, and stay tuned to hear more about the possibility of an after-school club!

Mr D has started curling this week at school. The students are having a great time learning how to play #fmpsd #ymm

Today students were each given a different geographic region of Canada that we are going to be using to guide our work moving forward. Students were able to pick from: the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Lowlands, the Canadian Shield, the Interior Plains, the Cordillera, and the Arctic regions. Each student ranked their top 3 choices, and groups were created with that information in mind. Each student got either their third, second, or first choice. At the library each student was asked to find a resource on their region. If they were studying the Cordillera they could select a book about Victoria or British Columbia, if the Interior Plains, why not learn about Manitoba? Later this morning students were all asked to start skimming and scanning these books, looking for interesting facts about their region. They were also asked to form questions that they still had about their regions. Students will have more time to finish skimming and scanning tomorrow, and then we will be putting these books and research to good use!

In Math today, we reviewed our Division strategies for the last time. Students do have some practice questions to complete tonight (pg. 102 #1-7). We will be writing our Multiplication and Division Unit Test on Monday, so it is very important that students do not fall behind. If your student is struggling, please see the links on the right. There are videos for all of the multiplication and division strategies that we covered in class. Students who want to start studying should consider working on the questions from the textbook at home, or working on Mathletics. New Mathletics activities were assigned to all students today.

We also went on our Winter Walk today. It was lots of fun, and it was nice to be out in the sunshine for a change. Take a look at some of the fun pictures/videos from our day:

Did You Know…? Carotenemia is an illness caused by the consumption of too many carrots. Its most obvious symptom is orange skin.

Good afternoon,

Today we were lucky enough to have our Toque Tuesday celebrations. Students attended an assembly that included representative from the Center of Hope, the Regional Municipality, and Fort McMurray Public Schools. Students were congratulated on being able to raise over $2, 000 through the sale of Toque and Socks, and encouraged to continue to donate through our Spirit Week options. Then we had a Sock Hop in the gym as a celebration. It was a lot of fun!

After so much fun DPA, we needed a way to refocus and get back into our classroom. So we used our GoNoodle account. Specifically we did an activity called “Flow” which takes students through small guided meditations. Students use focused movement and breathing to help us to focus, change our attitude, fell more confident, etc. We’ve used it so much this year (usually before tests, etc.) that we filled in the entire tree! Check out our certificate below:

We also maxed out our champion, Squatchy Burger, today which meant we got to select someone new to train with. We picked…Bart Reynolds. Want to see how strong Squatchy was when we finished with him? Click below to see that certificate. So far this year we have logged 327 minutes of physical activity using GoNoodle a few times a week. That’s over 5 hours! And don’t forget some of our other DPA activities. Students love getting to play Silent Ball, People Patterns, going outside, Alphabet Stretching, and even just putting on some music and stretching or dancing. Keep up the good work everyone!

Did You Know…? Kingfishers dive so fast that they can penetrate a layer of ice to catch a fish.

Good evening,

Today we started our brainstorming for our new paragraphs. As today was Monday, students were not required to write anything new. Instead, they brainstormed as much as they could about a topic. Our topics this week were:

  • My favourite subject is…
  • Toque Tuesday is important because…

Tomorrow we will be writing our body sentences!

In Math today, students practiced their last division strategy – repeated subtraction. You can watch the video below to see an example of how to use the base-10 block and the repeated subtraction strategies (she does them simultaneously).

After practicing as a class, students worked in small groups to complete 3 examples. Tonight students have been asked to teach this strategy to someone at home, so please take the time to review this strategy tonight!

In French today, students worked on their final clothing assignment. Students were asked to consider what they would wear for different types of weather phenomenon. Check out the examples below! If students did not get a chance to finish in class, they need to finish before French next week. Next up, les animeaux!

In Health today, we continued with our FRIENDS program. Students have been practicing relaxing! We did two different breathing exercises. The first was to take as many shallow, fast breaths as we could in 1 minute. It was hard! Then I asked the students how they felt. We felt: dizzy, nauseous, tired, couldn’t focus, wanted to fall down, exhausted, nervous, anxious, frightened, like fainting, like we had a headache. We discussed how quickly we were able to make our bodies feel this way – after only 1 minute! Then I asked students to think about the effects on their bodies if they are under prolonged stress, and how it would make you feel. Next we did some “belly breathing” to help us to relax. We breathed in through our noses for 5 seconds, and out through our mouths for 5 seconds, while resting our hands on our bellies. We felt a lot better afterwards. Next we discussed tension in our muscles. Stress and anxiety can often make us feel tense. To relieve it, we practiced tightening our muscles for 5 seconds and then relaxing our muscles for 10 seconds. We felt a lot better afterwards. Try these at home, work, or school the next time you feel anxious! You could also: play with your pet, spend time with your friends, laugh, cook a meal with family, sing songs, draw pictures, etc. Students had lots of great examples of things they do to help them feel their best!
