April 2nd

Good evening!

We had a great day today. Thank you to everyone who came dressed up and ready to have some 1970’s fun! We started our morning off by reading chapter 3 of “Bridge to Terabithia” to find out what Jesse’s first day of school was like. We talked about some of the differences between his school and our own. One thing we have really noticed is that the boys and girls do not interact as much as they do at our school. In “Bridge to Terabithia” the girls and boys play on different parts of the schoolyard and the boys are all surprised/angry when Leslie wants to run with them. Today we did quite a few activities that were really different for us to help us to practice our theme. We practiced cursive writing in Language Arts, we did some math drills on our multiplication tables in Math, and we wrote a Social Studies Quiz on our own, without being able to use group planning and discussion. The girls always got to line up before the boys, some desks got turned around, and one student even had to stand up at the board! It was a really fun day, and everyone really enjoyed some of the activities and the different routines.

We also had our FRIENDS Assembly today. As many of you know, Total actually provides the funding to Canadian Mental Health and the Fort McMurray Public School District, in order for us to be able to take part in the FRIENDS program. Today the Grade 5 students shared a relaxation activity with the Grade 1 students, as well as some visitors from Total, Canadian Mental Health, Doug Nicholls, and Mayor Blake. The Grade 1 students have just started their FRIENDS program, so they were able to share a little bit about what they have learned so far. Thank you to everyone for your help today. Everyone did a wonderful job of respecting our TRIBES agreements!

April 1

Good evening,

Today we started our morning off with Computers. Students have started working on a small Geography project to help wrap up our study of Geography for the year. The assignment sheet that students were using to help guide them is posted below. Today students were merely beginning their research and beginning to look for photos that they could use. Students are going to have 3 full Computers classes to work on this activity, and a due date will be set after that time for students who may require more time. However, some students did express an interest in getting started at home or using images from home, so please feel free to download the assignment sheet as is to guide any extra work that students may be doing. An updated sheet with the rubric will be posted next week.

In Language Arts today we started exploring a new Guided Reading center that has students explore the “Wonder of the Day”. As many of you know, we do use http://wonderopolis.org/ most days to help students with the free writing in the morning. During Guided Reading, students are going to be getting the opportunity to learn more about the “Wonder of the Day” and to respond to it. They will be doing a Think Dots activity. Think Dots are when students use a dice to select which question they need to respond too. You can view the activity below to get a better understanding:

Think Dots – Wonder of the Day

Students complete there entry in their Reading Strategies duotangs to be reviewed by me. Today we were learning about “Why the Sea is Salty”.

In Book Buddies today we started an Art Project. We made some totem poles with their Grade 1 buddies. Students were asked to consider what animals you would traditionally see on a totem pole, but they were asked to support their buddies in their choice. The students did a wonderful job! Everyone was very focused and engaged. You’ll be able to view our displayed Art work during our upcoming Multicultural Night. Stay tuned for more information!
