February 3rd

“Let us love winter, for it is the spring of genius.”
–  Pietro Aretino

Good evening!

Today we started off by continuing to practice 3-digit by 1-digit multiplication. We reviewed our estimation strategies and our base ten block strategies. We also explored a new strategy today. We are calling it the break apart strategy. It looks something like this:

Math - Feb. 3

Please ensure that all students are practicing multiplication and division at home as often as possible. Try using Mathletics (www.mathletics.ca) or you can review for our multiplication quiz. This week students will be quizzed on their 5x and 8x tables.

In Social Studies today we read about Samuel Hearne and his discovery of the Coppermine River. Samuel Hearne was a British explorer. He is most remembered for being the first European to reach the Arctic Ocean by foot. However, today we reviewed an expedition he took through the Canadian Shield to reach the Coppermine River. He actually attempted this expedition twice before he was successful, and his third attempt took him two and a half years. Along  the way they suffered terrible hardship for lack of food, supplies, weather, etc. We read a journal entry that Samuel Hearne kept during his second failed attempt. In the entry we read about the explorers having to sleep outside of their tents, make shoes from their tent fabric, go without food for 4-5 days, eating raw food because they did not have the resources to properly cook it, resorting to cooking small bits of leather and clothing, etc. You can imagine how difficult it would be to spend two and a half years on limited supplies, walking at least 20 miles per day, all without a map. Students were then asked to write a journal entry about this expedition. Students may write from the perspective of Samuel Hearne, a First Nations companion, or Matonabee, Samuel Hearne’s Dene Sulinee guide. The rough copy of this journal is due tomorrow for editing.
