Good afternoon!

What a great day we had at the ski hill! Thanks again everyone for coming so prepared. Even though it was cold out we all had a fun day. I saw lots of students being active and trying their best. It was really nice to be outside of our classroom for the whole day doing something fun. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to go back out on Feb. 6th!

We got back to school just in time to talk about this week’s Reading NINJA question. Students are asked to tell me about the most important event in their book so far, and 3 reasons why you think it is important. The Reading NINJA Journals all came back with something new in them as well… our NINA belts. Students worked hard in Term 1, and most students earned a yellow belt. Some students have earned both a yellow and an orange belt, and some students are very close to being awarded a green belt! Don’t forget, if you make it to black belt you are a Reading Master and will be finished your Reading Journal for the year. Students who don’t have belts in their journals will receive them when they hand them in on Friday.

December 3rd

Good afternoon!

We had a busy, but a great day today. We started out by going to Computers and once again using our Mathletics program. We are now working in a new unit, Multiplication and Division. Today students worked on a variety of activities based on their needs and skill level. Students were working on multiplying numbers by 10, 100, 100, dividing numbers, multiplication facts, mental math strategies, etc. We will return to many of these activities throughout this unit as our confidence and skill levels grow. Today was a day for me to be able to see what students already know, and where our strengths and weaknesses lie. This will help me to better facilitate instruction throughout the unit.

We also had our Monthly Virtues Assembly today. This months virtue is Trustworthiness. Students got to see some of the things that ECDP has been preparing. They sang a song and had some videos to share with us. We also played a DPA game together in the gym. Want to try it at home? Click the link below:

Congratulations to our Classroom Citizen, Reader of the Month, Timberlea Spirit, APPLE Schools, and Star Student award winners. Keep up the good work everyone!

Today we had 2 visitors in our class from Ignite. We have been beta testing a Wetlands Unit prepared by this organization for the past few months. This kit came with videos, powerpoint presentations, experiments, samples of wetlands plants, a build your own wetlands kit, learning files, discussion cards, etc. that we have been using throughout the Unit. Ignite wanted to have a small focus group to discuss with students some things that they liked about the kit and improvements that they would like to see made. We discussed the Beta Kit together as a class and brainstormed our likes/dislikes on the board. The students provided lots of great and honest feedback! During silent reading today, 4 students participated in the focus group with our guests. They had a conference call with the Ignition team in Calgary. They shared with them some of the activities that we loved (the haikus, building the wetlands, our projects, the adaptation robots, the learning files, etc.) but also some of the things they thought could be improved. I was really impressed by your answers! As a class we came up with:

  • More hands on-activities
  • More challenging or more detailed games
  • A more animated voice for the powerpoints
  • Videos that could be saved to a disc
  • More pieces for the Build a Wetlands Kit
  • A kit to assemble some of the Adaptations robots

There were lots more great suggestions that I know Ignite will definitely be looking at to improve the kit for the next class that gets to use it. We are now finished our Wetlands Unit. We will be completing 2 culminating activities this week and next, and we will have our Unit Test early next week.

Just a quick reminder that we are planning on going skiing tomorrow. Please have your students come prepared for the cold weather. Students must bring snowpants, hats, mittens, ski jackets, etc. Students who are not dressed for the weather will, unfortunately, not be allowed to participate out of concern for their safety. Any equipment that students would like brought out to the ski hill can be brought to the front of the school tomorrow morning. We have parent volunteers who will be loading the equipment and driving it out to the ski hill for us. There are approximately 80 students travelling to the ski hill tomorrow. Students follow our usual schedule in terms of breaks and lunch. This means that they will be having lunch from approximately 12:25 pm – 12: 50 pm. I’m sure you can imagine the difficulties that arise when 80 students attempt to buy their lunch in such a short period of time. Please ensure that your child packs a lunch to bring with us, just as you would on a regular school day. This is extremely important. If students only bring money and the weather changes and we decide to postpone our trip, your child will then be at school without a lunch. This is also better in keeping with our schools encouraged adherence to APPLE Schools’ policies and procedures. We will be leaving the school promptly at 8:30 am tomorrow morning, and will return to school shortly before dismissal at 2:50 pm. Questions and concerns in regards to the trip can be sent to me. We’re looking forward to getting outside and being active tomorrow!
